Vanessa L. Gibson Connects with Local Entrepreneurs to Support Businesses Growth and Strengthen the Borough’s Economy

(Bronx, NY) — Bronx Borough President Vanessa L. Gibson joined a dynamic forum today at the Bronx Council on the Arts, bringing together a broad spectrum of business leaders to discuss the future of commerce and development in the borough. Hosted by the Bronx Chamber of Commerce, the event underscored the Bronx’s commitment to fostering an inclusive and thriving economic environment.Attendees represented a wide array of industries, including healthcare, education, telecommunications, real estate, entertainment, finance, nonprofits, and cosmetics. The gathering featured representatives from major corporations such as Affinity, Altice, AT&T, MGM Resorts, and JPMorgan Chase, as well as mid-sized companies and small businesses, including American Maintenance & Janitorial Services, Green Canvas Productions, Indigo Beauty Cosmetics, and nonprofits such as BronxWorks and YMCA-Bronx. During the discussion, Borough President Gibson emphasized the importance of supporting small businesses and highlighted available resources designed to help them grow and succeed. She noted the significant role small businesses play in the Bronx’s economic landscape and community life.“We need to ensure that small businesses in the Bronx not only survive—but thrive,” said Bronx Borough President Vanessa L. Gibson. “The Bronx is home to some of the most innovative  entrepreneurs, and I’m committed to providing the support they need to succeed. From expanding access to capital and technology, as well as revitalizing our commercial corridors, we must keep our businesses protected and supported.”Gibson highlighted several key initiatives aimed at bolstering the borough’s economic landscape:Kingsbridge Armory Revitalization: A transformative project allocating capital funding to convert the long-vacant Kingsbridge Armory into a vibrant economic hub, creating jobs and attracting long-term investment.

South Bronx Small Business Loans: In partnership with the Bronx Economic Development Corporation, a new microloan program has been launched to support businesses across the Bronx, providing funding for infrastructure, initial build-outs, and outfitting.

$600,000 Investment in The Hub: Through the Recovering Together initiative, a $600,000 grant has been allocated to the Third Avenue Business Improvement District (BID) for public safety measures, small business support, and infrastructure improvements in The Hub area, administered in collaboration with the Bronx Economic Development Corporation.

Ongoing Economic Growth: Continued collaboration with local stakeholders to enhance economic opportunities, ensuring that small businesses remain central to a robust and resilient Bronx economy.“The Bronx is a borough rich with talent, diversity, and opportunity,” said Lisa Sorin, President of the Bronx Chamber of Commerce. “Our local businesses – regardless of size – are the backbone of our economy. By supporting their growth and fostering innovation, we are building a stronger, more resilient Bronx for All. Her unwavering dedication to the Bronx’s economic vitality is evident through her strategic investments and initiatives that empower our local businesses.” The forum served as a platform for open dialogue, allowing business leaders to share their experiences and collaborate on strategies to overcome obstacles and seize new opportunities. Attendees shared their experiences navigating challenges such as accessing capital, managing rising operational costs, and sustaining growth.

Vanessa L. Gibson was elected as the 14th Bronx Borough President on November 2, 2021, making history as the first woman and first African American to hold the office. A lifelong public servant, she has dedicated her career to advocating for Bronx residents, championing issues such as public safety, housing, education, and economic development. Previously, she served in the New York State Assembly and New York City Council, where she became the first African American woman to chair the Public Safety Committee. She played a key role in passing landmark legislation, including Right to Counsel for tenants facing eviction. As Borough President, Gibson has secured over $50 million for Bronx schools, expanded workforce development programs, and led initiatives to improve food access, public safety, and small business recovery.
